Showdown in San Antonio, AT&T Championship, set for this week at Oak Hills

October 15, 2007 - San Antonio, Texas: The 2007 Champions Tour race, one of the tightest in years, will all come down to the AT&T Championship presented by Alcatel-Lucent this week at historic Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio.

Final spots in next week’s Charles Schwab Championship will be determined at the 54-hole Champions Tour event, which begins Friday morning at par 71 Oak Hills.

Charles Schwab Cup points leader Loren Robert heads a very strong field coming into San Antonio, including seven of the top 10 Schwab Cup points and money list standings. Included are former AT&T Champion Jay Haas, who is second to Roberts in the Schwab points standings, along with defending AT&T champion Fred Funk.

Also making his first appearance at the AT&T Championship is Champions Tour rookie Bernhard Langer, who is coming off an all-time Champions Tour record-tying performance. He blitzed the field in last week’s Champions Tour event outside Houston to win by eight shots. It was his first win in just his fourth 50-and-over tournament appearance.

“It’s pretty amazing and exciting that after a full season of Champions Tour golf, it’s all coming down to the AT&T Championship in San Antonio,” said tournament director Colby Callaway.

“It’s going to be a great show for our fans at Oak Hills this week.”

A full week of tournament activities will take place during the event highlighted by the 54-hole tournament which begins on Friday.

The top 30 money winners after this week’s showdown in San Antonio will advance to next week’s season-ending Charles Schwab Championship at Sonoma Golf Club in Northern California.

Currently less than $5,000 separates No. 30 money winner Jim Thorpe from Austin’s Tom Jenkins, ranked No. 31, leaving Jenkins out of the Charles Schwab Championship for now, unless he does well this week and can move up in the earnings ranking.

The race for the $1 million dollar Charles Schwab Cup annuity is equally close. Loren Roberts, a regular San Antonio visitor and former Texas Open Champion, surged into the lead two weeks ago with the victory at the Senior Players Championship and holds a 69-point lead over Haas.

Roberts, who did not play in Houston last week, said he’s always glad to play in San Antonio.

“It’s been a very familiar and a very good place for me over the years,” he said. “I always look forward to coming back. The people there have been very nice to me.”

Haas, who finished tied for fourth last week, defeated Roberts by 20 points for the Charles Schwab Cup last year, the closest race in the six-year Cup history.

After last week, there are only six players who have a mathematical chance to win the Charles Schwab Cup, five of which are entered in San Antonio.

Also playing this year is Austin favorite Ben Crenshaw, who is having the best year of his five-year Champions Tour career. He has already qualified for his first Charles Schwab Cup Championship next week, but is still seeking his first victory.

Dallas’ Lee Trevino will be making an appearance this week after deciding not to retire at the end of the year, along with San Antonio’s Bill Rogers.

There are still a very limited number of tickets left for this week’s golf by calling 210-698-3582 or going to www.attchamp.com.
